The Red Devils have been looking to sign Vidal for some time, but Juve are keen to keep hold of the Chile international and so instead attention has turned to a former target.
Guarin was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer and the player himself was interested in the switch, but despite ongoing negotiations nothing ever materialised.
Zenit St Petersburg also made an attempt to sign the 28-year-old, but he rejected the Russian side and has held hopes of one day joining United.
Inter are now resigned to the fact that they are likely to lose Guarin in the January transfer window and if the offer is right the Serie A club will part with the Colombia international.
The South American joined the Nerazzuri from FC Porto in the summer of 2012 and has since played 95 times for the side in all competitions.
