Ferguson confirms plans to keep centre back at the club after the summer.
Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that veteran defender Rio Ferdinand could soon be offered a new deal to remain at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season, reports the Sun.
Runaway Premier League leaders United have just announced that 40-year-old winger Ryan Giggs has agreed a new one-year contract extension that will keep the Welshman at the club beyond this summer.
And now Ferguson has suggested that the same one-year deal will be offered to 34-year-old some-time England international centre-back Ferdinand, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence.
“It is a strong possibility. I think he has had a great season,” Ferguson said in his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of facing Norwich City in the Premier League on Saturday.
“He has managed himself in the right way.”
Meanwhile, the Scot was also full of praise for Giggs, saying: “What can I say about Ryan that hasn’t already been said?
“He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being. Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has looked after himself.
“His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract.”
