Manchester United Louis van Gaal has been linked with seemingly all of his Netherlands World Cup squad this summer, but if reports from the Mail are correct, he is closing in on the signing of one of them – Feyenoord centre back Stefan de Vrij.
The 22 year-old is already a seasoned performer in the Eredivisie, having made 135 league appearances for Feyenoord since breaking through into the first team at the Rotterdam club as a teenager.
As with most of the best young players that the Dutch league produces, however, it now seems as though De Vrij has outgrown his nest at and Old Trafford is now looking likely to be the destination for the player to test himself further.
De Vrij has been a key part of the three man defence that Van Gaal has used with Holland so far at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, impressing alongside Ron Vlaar and Bruno Martins Indi, the latter of whom has also been linked with a summer move to follow van Gaal to United.
The defence at Old Trafford certainly needs a summer patch-up, with experienced pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both having left the club on free transfers at the end of last season.
