The Italian international, 24, has been on Louis van Gaal’s radar for some time and is now high on the Dutchman’s list of priorities for the winter, with United short of options in defence.
It is thought that the Red Devils would like a player to compete with both Rafael at right-back and Luke Shaw on the left-hand side, and Darmian’s availabilityt at just £15m makes him an attractive prospect.
United have also been linked with Barcelona’s Dani Alves, but may opt for Darmian as a more long-term option than the ageing Brazilian.
