David Moyes has earmarked a £6m deal for Barca midfielder Sergi Roberto…
Manchester United manager David Moyes will target Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto in January, reports the Metro.
The Premier League champions have been told the young Spaniard is available for around £6m, and it could be that Moyes will eventually sign a central midfielder from Barcelona after all.
In the summer, United tried and failed to sign both Thiago Alcantra and Cesc Fabregas. The former joined Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich instead, and Fabregas was adamant that he wanted to stay at the Catalan giants.
Roberto would be a far cheaper option with a far smaller profile. He’s only made five league apparances for Barcelona since 2010, but is highly rated as a technical passing midfielder.
With the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets, and Fabregas to name but a few, Roberto’s chances of nailing down a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp seem very slim, and United want to take advantage of his desire for first-team football.
With less than two years left on his contract, the Barcelona hierarchy are keen to recoup some sort of transfer fee for him, after investing lots of time and money into the young midfielder’s development.
