Italian international has been linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico.
Manchester United will reportedly switch their attention to Lazio ace Antonio Candreva if they fail in their bid to sign Thiago Alcantara.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, David Moyes has decided that the 26-year-old would be an excellent addition this summer, as it looks more likely that Bayern Munich will land Barcelona starlet Thiago.
Pep Guardiola spoke this week about his desire to see the Spaniard join him in Germany, after it had appeared that he was set for a switch to Old Trafford.
As a result, Moyes is expected to look at alternatives and it is understood that Candreva fits the bill as the search continues to add depth to their midfield.
The Lazio star impressed during the Confederations Cup, with a string of strong performances for Cesare Prandelli’s Italy.
It capped off a successful season for Candreva, who helped Lazio to a Coppa Italia victory at the end of last season, with a win over bitter city rivals Roma in the final.
Reports in Italy suggest that Napoli will provide competition for the Premier League champions, with Rafa Benitez set to go head-to-head with Moyes again.
However, it is unclear at this stage as to whether Lazio president Claudio Lotito would be willing to sell the player, who is also co-owned by Udinese.
Speculation earlier this month suggested that Lotito was keen to offer Candreva new terms on his contract in order to secure his future in the Italian capital, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will find the appeal of playing in England too strong to turn down if United’s interest is genuine.
