United could finally sign Ezequiel Garay in January…
Manchester United boss David Moyes has earmarked Benfica’s Argentine centre-half Ezequiel Garay as a priority January transfer target, reports the Metro.
United have been linked with the 26-year-old for the past two seasons, as a potential long term replacement for either Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic.
Garay currently plays for Benfica, and was a runner-up in the Europa League final last season to Chelsea. He has outstanding technical ability, and is more than capable of starting attacks from defence with a slick, intricate pass into the midfield. Garay also aims to receive the ball from the keeper from goal-kicks, and would seemingly fit into United’s smooth passing style.
The Premier League champions are ready to offer £15m for the classy stopper in January, but the Portuguese side will want closer to £20m for his signature. Benfica regularly sell their best players though, so a move for Garay would be very possible if United made a serious approach.
David Moyes already has Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling as backup for his stalwart pairing, but the Argentine would surely demand a first-team starting spot should he be signed when the transfer window opens.
