Manchester clubs could go head-to-head for talented Porto man.
Manchester City and Manchester United target Fernando will play in the Premier League next season, according to his agent.
The Porto midfielder, 26, was linked with a deadline day move to City, while United, Liverpool and Everton were also said to be tracking the Brazilian.
Fernando’s agent, Antonio Araujo, has admitted City and Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco were interested in his client and says the enforcer is likely to end up in England.
“God willing, Fernando will play in the Premier League next season,” Araujo is quoted as saying by Portuguese source Abola.
“Manchester City was the strongest candidate of all. But they were not alone in the race to sign Fernando.
“Fernando was offered a very good contract of Monaco, but FC Porto found that the proposal received was not in line with what they wanted.”
The news comes on the same day Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward promised unprecedented spending in the summer.
City, meanwhile, are in need of a new central midfielder, with both Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia failing to hold down first team spots since arriving.
