With a British record £59.7m deal to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid as good as done, Manchester United have now turned their attention to Juventus’ Arturo Vidal, reports the Independent.
The Chile international is valued at around £34m and if the Red Devils are successful in landing the midfielder it will take their summer spending to well over £150m.
That is because as well as di Maria, Ander Herrera was signed from Athletic Bilbao for £29m, Luke Shaw from Southampton for £27m and Marcos Rojo was acquired from Sporting Lisbon for £16m.
Vidal has been on the wishlist of the 13-time Premier League champions for some time, although new manager Louis van Gaal’s has some concerns over the 27-year-old’s knee injuries.
The South American injured his right knee during a Serie A match with Napoli last season and despite it needing to be operated on, played four more games before surgery.
Van Gaal is worried this has aggravated the problem beyond repair and that is why United have been slow in starting negotiations with Juve.
There is the idea of offering a highly incentivised contract to Vidal that sees the Chilean earning the majority of his wages when he is actually fit to play.
Something similar was given to Michael Owen in 2011 when the striker completed his switch to Old Trafford from Newcastle United.
