The Red Devils are desperate to make a new big-name signing in midfield after missing out on the likes of Arturo Vidal and Toni Kroos this summer, with Strootman thought to be their next target.
However, United have since learned that Roma are unwilling to negotiate for the Dutchman, who only joined the club last summer and who has been superb since making the move to Serie A.
This will now see Louis van Gaal switch his focus to Strootman’s team-mate Pjanic, who has been another top performer for Roma in recent times and who would likely cost around £40m.
The Bosnian international signed a new contract earlier this year, and has previously been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
