Having already signed Angel di Maria for a British record £59.7m Manchester United are ready to take this week’s spending to over £100m with a £45m double swoop for Juventus’ Arturo Vidal and Daley Blind of Ajax, according to the Mirror.
Di Maria was secured from Real Madrid on Tuesday, but new manager Louis van Gaal is still not satisfied with his squad and wants Blind and Vidal to bolster things.
Following the Red Devils’ 4-0 humiliation at the hands of League One outfit MK Dons in the Capital One Cup in Tuesday van Gaal has realised that more support is needed if he is to achieve anything with the team this season.
Vidal has been on the club’s wishlist for some time, but the Dutchman has concerns over a knee injury the 27-year-old sustained during the 2013/14 campaign.
The Chile international suffered the problem during a Serie A match with Napoli, but played for four more games before having surgery and van Gaal fears this may have caused irreversible damage.
However, United are still prepared to sanction £30m for Vidal with a combative defensive midfielder still needed to accompany the more creative sources of di Maria, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.
Meanwhile Blind is a particular favourite of van Gaal’s having worked with the 63-year-old for two years when he was in charge of the Netherlands national team.
The 24-year-old offers great versatility – with the ability to play at left-back, centre-back, or in defensive midfield – and it’s thought the Dutch star would cost around £15m.
