The Red Devils are keen to strengthen in defence next season and could pounce as Mathieu looks unlikely to stay at the Nou Camp despite only joining the club from Valencia this summer.
Louis van Gaal’s side are also thought to be looking at Barca right-back Dani Alves, in a potential double raid on the La Liga runners-up.
Mathieu has shown himself to be a solid centre-back, but has not quite found his best form since moving to Barcelona this season.
