The 22-year-old had impressed under current Southampton boss Ronald Koeman last season when the pair were at Feyenoord, and carried on that good form into the World Cup.
He had been linked with a switch to the Premier League, but ultimately decided to join Portuguese giants Porto instead.
Reports have suggested that United boss Louis Van Gaal is keen on a reunion with the player this month and will likely speed up his approach with the transfer deadline fast approaching.
Martins Indi cost Porto just £6m last summer, though he is thought to be rated at around double that figure now.
