The Red Devils have been strongly linked with the 2014 World Cup winner ever since central defensive partnership Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left the club over the summer.
Hummels is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in world football currently and will have a price-tag to match that assessment, but big spending United will not be deterred be a hefty transfer fee.
However, the 13-time Premier League champions will have to wait until next summer to land the Germany international, with the funds not being made available to manager Louis van Gaal until then.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has revealed that due to the club’s absence from the Champions League the finances at Old Trafford have been greatly affected and no new transfers are expected to be made in January as a result.
This is despite the fact huge sponsorship agreements have been made with Chevrolet and Adidas in recent times, although almost £150m was spent on new talent last summer including the British record £59.7m purchase of Angel di Maria.
