United agreed a deal for Coentrao on transfer deadline day in August but the move collapsed because the paperwork was not completed in time.
But the Red Devils have continued to be linked with a move for the 25-year-old, who has made just four La Liga starts so far this season.
Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti is adamant that the club will not do any business in January but, according to Lopes, Coentrao wants to move to Old Trafford and United have presented Real with an offer.
But Lopes also says Ancelotti is a fan of the Portugal international and prefers him to Brazilian left back Marcelo, who has been first choice in La Liga and the Champions League this term in the absence of Coentrao through injury.
News on Coentrao. He wants a move and MUFC is a real option, that he likes. Ancelotti trying hard to keep him.
