Southampton’s Shaw is the club’s next target after Mata deal.
After completing the £37.1m transfer of Juan Mata from Chelsea on Saturday Manchester United have now submitted a £22.5m offer for Southampton youngster Luka Shaw, according to the Daily Star.
The teenager has been impressing at St Mary’s for the past two seasons and is now a firm member of the starting XI, despite still only being 18-years-old.
The Blues have also shown interest in Shaw as they look for a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole, but after signing Mata it’s United that have made the first move.
Temporary Saints chairman and owner Katarina Liebherr has clearly stated that none of Maurico Pochettino’s squad will be sold in the January transfer window, but the Red Devils’ offer may be too good to refuse.
The south coast club are holding out for £30m for Shaw and with the left-back having only recently signed a five-year deal, they are in a good position to make their demands.
The England under-21 international is the latest product of the prolific academy at the Hampshire side and broke into the first team in 2012.
Shaw follows in the footsteps of Gareth Bale, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott in progressing from the Southampton youth system.
The defender has played 49 first team matches for the Saints to date, including 20 appearances in all competitions this season and the starlet also has three under-21 caps.
United manager David Moyes is looking to find a replacement for Patrice Evra, who is expected to leave Old Trafford when the Frenchman’s contract expires in the summer.
