Red Devils look like missing out on their first-choice defensive target of the summer.
New Manchester United manager David Moyes is set to swoop for highly-rated young Southampton defender Luke Shaw after being priced out of a move for Everton full-back Leighton Baines, according to reports in the Daily Star.
The Scot, who has just taken over at Old Trafford from former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, had been hoping to persuade his former club to sell him their coveted England international this summer as a replacement for left-back Patrice Evra, who is expected to depart the north west in order to return home to France and join either big-spending Paris Saint-Germain or his former club AS Monaco.
However, the Toffees are understood to be determined to keep hold of Baines for next season come what may, which has led Moyes to now switch his focus towards the Saints player, who is expected to cost the Red Devils £10 million.
The England Under-17 international has been playing for Southampton for the past two campaigns, during which time the 17-year-old has featured in a total of 29 matches, including 25 in the Premier League.
