David Moyes after Luka Modric…
Manchester United will turn to Real Madrid’s 27-year-old playmaker Luka Modric after missing out on Barcelona’s Spanish star Cesc Fabregas, according to The Guardian.
Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini was reportedly Manchester United’s primary midfield target after missing out on Thiago and Cesc Fabregas, but Moyes could now turn to the Croat after Roberto Martinez indicated that neither Fellaini or Leighton Baines were for sale.
Since his mega-money to Real Madrid from Tottenham last summer, Modric as failed to justify his enormous price tag. Despite making 53 appearances in all competitions, many were from the bench; and the diminutive midfielder often played second fiddle to the mercurial Xabi Alonso.
For this reason, a bid of around £25m could be enough for Madrid to consider cutting their losses.
During his four stint in the Premier League, Modric was widely recognised as one of the most technically gifted players in the country. His passing, vision and creativity is desperately needed at Old Trafford, who are struggling in the central midfield area. Paul Scholes has retired, Darren Fletcher is plagued with constant illness and injury, and Ryan Giggs is quickly approaching his 40th birthday.
With just three weeks of the transfer window left, Moyes will be increasingly urgent to make his first marquee summer signing. United lost yet another pre-season game at the weekend – falling 3-1 to Sevilla in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial, and they will be keen to inject some positivity into fans, some of whom are becoming increasingly anxious about the start of the season.
