ARSENAL 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 3 (Champions League semi-final second leg, May 2009)
With United aiming to become the first team to retain the Champions League after the 2008 success, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side travelled to London with a 1-0 goal advantage from the first leg. The visitors stormed into a two goal lead on the night, with Ji-Sung Park and Cristiano Ronaldo netting within three minutes to make it 3-0 on aggregate. Ronaldo added a third on the hour, before future United player Robin van Persie scored a late consolation from the spot. Arsenal were denied the chance to right the wrongs of the 2006 final defeat to Barcelona but were spared the humiliation of facing the brilliant Catalans in the final, which United lost 2-0 in Rome.
