Analysis of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
It’s going to be a tough ask for Premier League new boys Crystal Palace to take anything away from their match at Old Trafford with champions Manchester United.
The Eagles did win their last league tie against Sunderland, but David Moyes’ men are going to be a much bigger step up for the side.
History
Palace have never beaten United in the top tier of English football and not many would bet on that changing anytime soon.
The Red Devils have had a poor start though, failing to score in back-to-back league games for the first time since 2007 and recording their lowest points total from three matches – four – since 2008.
Key battles
Dwight Gayle v Nemanja Vidic – Many thought it was slightly barmy of the south London side to have paid £4.5m for Gayle, considering the striker had no Premier League experience.
However, a goal and an assist in the impressive 3-1 win over the Black Cats in the club’s last match means Vidic can’t go into this game underestimating the 22-year-old.
Robin Van Persie v Danny Gabbidon – After putting the Swansea City defence to the sword with two goals, Van Persie has faltered slightly up top for United.
Yet the Dutchman cannot be written off and a good international break with the Netherlands means Gabbidon should be kept busy.
Danny Welbeck v Joel Ward – Amazingly Ward has the best tackle success in the entire division, but an in-form Welbeck could be a tough challenge for the right-back.
Like Van Persie the young Englishman also scored a brace against Swansea and then did the same against Moldova for the Three Lions in the World Cup qualifiers.
Debuts
For United all the talk will be about how new £27.5m signing Marouane Fellaini will fit into the setup, with the Belgian likely to be handed the midfielder’s first appearance in this clash.
As for Palace, despite being busy in the transfer market several of their new faces are actually injured and will have to wait a little longer before taking to the field, although on-loan striker Cameron Jerome and ex-Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan could well feature.
