Manchester United’s pre-season friendly game against Real Madrid made history yesterday evening, when 109,318 people crammed into Michigan stadium The Big House, a record attendance for a football match in the USA.
Fans were treated to an entertaining match, in which Louis van Gaal’s United beat reigning European champions Real Madrid 3-1, thanks to two goals from Ashley Young and a late Javier Hernandez header.
With matches involving Liverpool also having smashed previous attendance figures during Premier League teams’ pre-season tours of the USA, it seems as though the buzz given to football from the World Cup is being keenly felt across the Atlantic.
The crowd smashed the previous record, which was set when 101,799 people watched France taken on Brazil in the 1984 Olympic gold medal match in Pasadena, California.
