Despite signing Angel di Maria for a club record £59.7m from Real Madrid on Tuesday, Manchester United are still targeting Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, reports the Independent.
The Serie A champions are holding out for £32m for the Chile international, but the Red Devils are not prepared to pay that and are lining up a player plus cash deal instead.
Either Javier Hernandez or Shinji Kagawa will be offered to Juve as a makeweight in the transfer as new manager Louis van Gaal is worried about the financial implications of signing Vidal.
The Dutchman has flagged up his concerns about the 27-year-old’s knee injury, which he picked up last season and required surgery as a result.
Vidal suffered the problem against Napoli in a league game, but then played four more matches before undergoing the operation and van Gaal thinks this may have damaged the knee beyond repair.
United also have grim memories of the Owen Hargreaves deal in the back of their minds, with the Englishman joining from Bayern Munich in 2007 and having his whole Old Trafford career plagued by knee injuries.
La Bianconeri are open to selling Vidal as long as they make a significant enough profit on the £7.9m they paid Bayer Leverkusen for the South American in 2011.
It’s thought the Italians would be drawn more towards Kagawa than Hernandez in a potential swap deal as well.
