Chelsea have decided to sell Spanish playmaker Juan Mata, and would be even willing to let him join Manchester United provided their Premier League rivals paid the £40m asking price, the Daily Mail reports.
Mata, 25, had established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League up until Jose Mourinho took over the reigns at Stamford Bridge last summer, but this season he has not been able to consistently get himself into the first-team. He’s been given just 11 starts in the Premier League, and just one in the Champions League, and is reportedly disgruntled at his lack of playing time.
United, following their 3-1 defeat away to Chelsea at the weekend, are 14 points off the top, and many fans are crying out for reinforcements.
The deal is complicated because Chelsea want United’s Wayne Rooney, but the Red Devils will flatly refuse to sell their talisman to the Blues.
The Mata deal could go ahead anyway, and although the price is steep, Davi Moyes is apparently willing to pay it. The Spaniard would add class and guile to United’s attack, which has lacked a cutting edge in the absence of injured pair Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.
