The Daily Star report that De Gea could be about to put pen to paper on a deal at the Bernabeu and become Rafa Benitez’s first signing when the former Liverpool boss is expected to takes charge of the La Liga giants in the coming days.
Los Blancos see the young Spaniard as the ideal, long-term replacement to veteran Iker Casillas and it seems De Gea, along with girlfriend Edurne Garcia, has been strolling the streets of tfhecity ahead of a possible reacquaintance after quitting it when he left Atletico Madrid for Manchester United in 2011.
Surprisingly, De Gea has been given the backing of the man he is likely to replace at the Bernabeu, with Casillas saying the Red Devils man would be welcomed with open arms.
“If De Gea does come here, he’ll be welcomed,” Casillas said, reports the Star.
“Competition is healthy – there is no clause in my contract which states that I have to be first choice.
“We’ll have to compete for a place like we do with Spain. De Gea is a great bloke and a goalkeeper for the present and the future.”
De Gea would return to Spain after perhaps his best season to date as a professional and after being crowned the Manchester United player of the year.
