On the pitch the 2014/15 season has been a disappointing one for Manchester United, but off it there have been some exciting developments in the transfer market.
The British record £59.7m acquisition of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid on Tuesday was the Red Devils’ fourth major signing of the summer and takes their spending to £131.7m.
Here is how Louis van Gaal’s side could lineup when everyone is fit and available.
GK – David de Gea
The goalkeeper has once again been one of the few positives for United this term and whilst everyone else appears to be having a nightmare the 23-year-old just continues to improve.
RB – Rafael
Is yet to feature this year due to injury, but the Brazilian is the only natural right-back left at Old Trafford and is certain to be a better option than Ashley Young.
CB – Phil Jones
Both Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have shown signs that they could be a liability already this campaign and although far from the complete package, Jones shows the most promise.
CB – Marcos Rojo
Alongside the England international is a defender signed from Sporting Lisbon for £16m this summer, although is yet to play as he waits on a work permit.
LB – Luke Shaw
The 3-5-2 formation has proven unsuccessful for van Gaal so far and with the players the Dutchman now has available a more traditional 4-4-2 would seem to suit proceedings, with new £27m signing Shaw at left-back.
