Liverpool will wrap up the €20m deal to sign Sevilla’s young left-back Alberto Moreno “within hours”, according to Spanish daily MARCA.
A deal has been able to be rushed through because the 21-year-old left-back didn’t make the final 23 for Vicente del Bosque’s Spain World Cup squad.
Moreno had been intention for selection due to his marvellous form for Sevilla in La Liga last term. The youngster established the left-back spot as his own, and put in consistently strong performances – helping his team with the Europa League as well.
His energy and dynamism enabled him to patrol the left flank both defensively and offensively, while his technical ability helped him retain possession, and pass the ball cleverly into midfield. He’s small, and while this means he’s current weak aerially, and sometimes in the tackle, he can bomb forward and overlap his winger.
In fact, on more than one occasion Moreno played in an advanced attacking midfield position for Sevilla last term.
Not only did his form earn him his first caps for the brilliant Spanish national side, but it also made him Liverpool’s prime left-back target.
The Reds struggled in that position this term with regular first-choice Jose Enrique missing virtually the entire season with an injury, and loanee Frenchman Aly Cissokho proving to be way below the required standard. Deputising, Jon Flanagan did well, but the young Englishman’s future is probably on the right of the defence.
Liverpool made an introductory €16m plus Spanish playmaker Suso offer for Moreno, but have come back in with an improved cash only €20m bid.
MARCA claim that there are no longer any complications with the deal, with the clubs having agreed a fee and Moreno likely to agree personal terms with Brendan Rodgers’ Anfield outfit.
