Marion Bartoli has lost out on a place in the WTA Championships in Istanbul at the end of the year after losing to Sofia Arvidsson at the Kremlin Cup.
The French veteran lost 6-3, 6-0 in an alarming loss of form, and now has lost five of the seven matches she has played against the world number 46.
Bartoli has the game to beat the best players – and has troubled Maria Sharapova on many an occasion to name but one example – but losses to players outside the top tier hinder her ability to breach that very echelon.
Still, credit to Arvidsson for a fine performance. Perhaps 2013 will bring renewed success.
