Manchester United are reportedly inching closer to completing a £36m deal for AS Monaco attacker Anthony Martial, and Ligue 1 expert Philippe Auclair says the aforementioned fee has left people in France “speechless”.
Martial is expected to become the richest teenager in world football should the deal be completed by today’s 6pm transfer deadline.
The 19-year-old has been heavily compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry despite having started just 29 games for Monaco in his short career.
Auclair told BBC Radio 5 Live that Manchester United’s offer for Martial is well above what the French public believe he is worth.
Is he worth that amount of money? If you ask the people back in France they will say no he’s not,” Auclair is reported as saying by Daily Express.
“This amount of money leaves people speechless in France.
“He’s still a very raw product, we don’t yet know how far Anthony Martial will go.”
Martial signed a new contract with Monaco until 2019 only recently, and a £36m move to Manchester United would see him become the costliest teenager in world football since Lucas Moura’s move from Sao Paulo to PSG in 2013, Newscorp reports.
In other United transfer news, the club have offloaded Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen while Adnan Januzaj has joined Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan.
