Wenger is keen to sign the Colombian as soon as possible, however The Mirror reports that the Gunners must clear out deadwood to make way for the FC Porto man.
Lukas Podolski, Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell will all need to make way to free up cash for Martinez, who will help bolster Wenger’s squad for an assault on the Premier League title.
All three players spent parts of the season on loan at other clubs, and the Gunners should have no issues palming off Campbell with Villarreal, Benfica and Real Sociedad all reportedly interested.
Podolski struggled at Inter Milan this season and his £100k-a-week wages is a major issue for the Gunners, with all interested clubs unlikely to stump up such wages for the German international.
Martinez would provide competition for spots up front, with Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck already on the club’s books.
The former Chiapas man scored 28 goals in all competitions this season and would be a major addition to Wenger’s squad as the Frenchman looks to hunt down Chelsea in the Premier League next season.
