The Germany World Cup winner performed the U-turn on his apparent interest in making the move to Old Trafford because they took to long to shore up a firm interest.
Hummels was initially said to be keen on a move to Manchester this summer, who were reported to be putting together a £35m offer, but he will now stay with the Bundesliga giants and force Louis Van Gaal’s men to turn their attentions elsewhere.
It is believed that Hummels’ snub is behind their apparent interest in Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi.
The delay caused Hummels to believe that perhaps he wasn’t what they were looking for, and underwent a change of heart, opting to stay where he knows he is wanted.
“It made sense Mats was thinking about his future, but I always planned for the future with him,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.
