Atlanta Falcons QB enters contract year knowing a Superbowl win would earn him huge money.
When Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco were taken in the same draft, they would be compared against each other for their entire career.
Right now, Flacco has the edge. Despite Ryan having more regular season wins, and potentially considered the better Quarterback, Joe Flacco has won a Superbowl, which trumps everything.
‘Matty Ice’ isn’t too far behind. The Atlanta Falcons were just four yards from going to the Superbowl instead of San Francisco to play the Ravens, so they are in a position to win a Superbowl sometime soon.
The Falcons want to keep Ryan around for a very long time, and the 27 year old wants to stay too. He also wants his salary to be based on his high level performance and his importance to the team, which is astronomical.
Which is why he and his agent will be taking a close look at how much the Ravens QB is paid, and based on next seasons performance, where he will sit in the asking price for a long-term deal.
When Ryan signed his rookie contract in 2008, he signed a $72m contract, many thought it was too large, but Ryan has certainly proved his worth in the league, and is among the elite signal callers in the game right now.
If the Falcons return to at least the NFC Championship game again, Ryan will be seeing a contract of at least $100m total value coming his way, if he wins the Superbowl, who knows how much owner Arthur Blank will pay up to make sure his QB stays around.
Big things are happening in Atlanta right now, with the team set up to win multiple championships in the next few years, and keeping Matt Ryan around is the main cog in everything, something that he and his agent know all to well. He is going to get paid big, and depending on the Flacco deal, it could be a lot.
