Thomas Muller had given the hosts the lead after finding the net from the penalty spot, but they were left stunned as Jaba Kankava beat Manuel Neuer with a volley from the edge of the box to level matters.
However, Joachim Low’s men weren’t to be held by their inferior rivals, with Kruse ensuring that they picked up all three points.
The result sees Germany top the group with 22 points from their 10 games, which included seven victories, one draw and two defeats.
Poland finished second in the group, while the Republic of Ireland were forced to settle for a place in the playoffs with the draw taking place next Sunday morning.
