According to figures released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday, the bout generated $72,198,500 from the sale of 16,219 tickets at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
That is three-times as much as the previous all-time boxing live gate record and it has made a significant impression in ensuring that the fight will go down as the richest fight in the history of the sport.
The previous record had also been set by Mayweather in his bout with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez back in 2013, when the pair generated $20,003,150 from the sale of 16,146 tickets to break the record before that made by Mayweather vs Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.
It is understood from the same report that 46 free tickets were issued, while there were nine tickets that went unsold which will naturally drive any fight fan crazy having missed out on the opportunity to attend.
The average price of a ticket to the fight was announced at $4,451.48, although it is acknowledged that it would in all likelihood be even more than that given the mark up on ticket prices in the secondary market.
ESPN’s Dan Rafael added context to the numbers by using the Super Bowl as a comparison, with a typical NFL season finale generating around $80m each year. However, the key difference of course is the fact that there would be the sale of more than 70,000 tickets at the respective stadium.
In addition, it is also reported that the fight sold 46,000 closed-circuit tickets for $150 apiece and it is suggested that it did 4.4 million PPV buys domestically which generated around $430m with the previous record set at $150m.
That of course doesn’t take into consideration the overseas PPV numbers which will ensure that the total raises dramatically and so as expected, Mayweather vs Pacquiao delivered financially and it will now certainly take something special to beat those records.
