Mayweather and Pacquiao will face off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in May in a bout that is expected to shatter numerous records in terms of revenue and global reach.
With negotiations breaking down over the last five years, the pair finally reached an agreement earlier this month and it promises to be a special night for boxing as the pound-for-pound kings go head-to-head.
As a result, Sulaiman is keen to create a special belt for the event with the winner treated to a strap that could even have emeralds or platinum.
“For this special recognition, I would like to have emeralds or platinum, but everything will be defined during the next weeks,” Sulaiman said in a statement posted to the WBC website.
“This is because of the magnitude of the event, which will be broadcast via TV networks globally.”
Mayweather will be looking to protect his unbeaten record which currently stands at 47-0, while Pacquiao will be hoping to upset the odds as he enters the bout as the outsider.
What is certain is that the fight will live up to expectations given the clash of styles, and opinion is undoubtedly split on who will win come May 2 as it is difficult to predict whether Pacquiao’s offense or Mayweather’s defense will prevail.
Sulaiman lamented the fact that boxing fans will be priced out of attending the event, but he hopes that with both fighters putting their respective legacies on the line, that millions of people will tune in around the world to watch the spectacle.
