Manchester United and Liverpool recently visited Australia as part of their pre-season programme.
Melbourne Heart head coach John Aloisi is eager for the club to organise its own glamour friendly with a European heavyweight.
After seeing cross-City rivals Melbourne Victory take on Liverpool at sold-out Melbourne Cricket Ground in July and the A-League All-Stars go up against Manchester United just a few days before, Aloisi wants Heart to follow suit.
The 37-year-old, who turned out for Coventry in the Premier League between 1998 and 2001, believes it would be huge for Australia if they could persuade a giant from across the continent to visit but says it won’t happen until next year at the latest.
“It would be great,” Goal.com report Aloisi as saying to Radio Sport National
“That’s out of my hands, it’s more to do with the people upstairs. If they could get someone like that, not only a Chelsea or a Tottenham, [but] a Real Madrid or a Barcelona, see someone like [Lionel] Messi to come to Australia, that would be something else.
“I don’t think it would happen this pre-season but maybe next pre-season.”
Heart’s preparations for the new term have been relatively low-key compared to when they took on Everton at Etihad Stadium prior to their debut campaign in to the 2010/11.
