Cameron Smith will miss the start of the 2015 NRL season after undergoing ankle surgery.
Storm coach Craig Bellamy revealed that Smith was expected to miss the opening three to four weeks of the season.
Smith suffered an ankle sprain during in the last match of the regular season against the Brisbane Broncos, which looked to have cleared up after a time in a moon boot.
However, the injury recurred while the 31-year-old led Australia in the Four Nations final.
“It healed up okay, but he hurt it again in the final,” Bellamy told SEN Radio.
“So they’ve decided he certainly needs an operation on it or it’s just going to cause him issues throughout the year.
“He just wants to be able to get back to 100 per cent, so they thought this was the only way we could do that.”
