The NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies will be without All-Star center Marc Gasol indefinitely with a sprained ligament in his left knee.
Gasol, the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, won’t need surgery, the team said Saturday.
He was hurt on a non-contact play in the second quarter of the Grizzlies’ 102-86 loss to San Antonio on Friday.
Gasol was defending Jeff Ayres in the post, and as Ayres went to receive an entry pass from Manu Ginobili, Gasol hobbled off the court in pain.
The Grizzlies said Saturday that an MRI exam had revealed a sprain of the medial collateral ligament.
Gasol is averaging 16.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 13 games this season. The durable Spaniard has missed just four games dating back to the start of the 2010-11 season.
