German defender believes his compatriot will slot with ease at the Emirates Stadium.
Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is the perfect manager to bring the best out of record signing Mesut Ozil.
After being criticised all summer by Gunners fans for his lethargic recruitment strategy, Wenger uncharacteristically parted with £42.5 million to coax Ozil away Real Madrid on transfer deadline day and executed one of the biggest deals in the window.
It’s a signing that has rendered supporters dizzy with excitement and Mertesacker is confident the 24-year-old, who he has played alongside for club and country, will excel under Wenger’s guidance.
“I know him quite well,” he told Sky Sports. “We spent two years together at Werder Bremen so I think that Arsene Wenger will get the best out of him.
“I think he will fit in. He suits us and we’re really looking forward to playing with him and to be his team-mate.”
Mertesacker admits he was always confident Wenger would make a notable foray into the market at some point, adding: “We were patient all the time on the transfer market. Mr Wenger said always that he was on the market but nothing happened.
“I could feel that something happened at the end of the transfer window. So I really appreciate that transfer.”
