The family of former Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher say that they remain hopeful that he will return to consciousness.
The 45 year-old has been in a coma since suffering head injuries after a ski accident in the French Alps on December 29th last year, and is being kept under by doctors to reduce swelling in his brain.
“It was clear from the start that this will be a long and hard fight for Michael,” said Schumacher’s relatives in a statement.
“We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up.”
Despite the increased optimism from Schumacher’s family, they were keen to stress that given the seriousness of his condition it remained “a time to be very patient”.
Still, this is the most positive news in quite some time, offering hope to his fans and those who care about him.
