Former England skipper Mike Gatting says the current side can win the Cricket World Cup despite their poor start.
In an interview with CricketWorld, Gatting admitted England needed to make massive improvements after their 111-run belting at the hands of Australia last Saturday.
England face co-hosts New Zealand on Friday, and Gatting said it will be a massive challenge for Eoin Morgan’s side.
“New Zealand are very confident at the moment and playing in their own country and it wouldn’t surprise me if New Zealand got to the final,” Gatting said.
“They’re a very competent unit…they’ve won their first two matches and England have got to really try and beat New Zealand.”
Despite many tipping England to be knocked out early, Gatting was optimistic about the country’s chances in the latter stages of the tournament.
“They’ve got to get some form going,” Gatting said.
“You might say that there’s no point playing well at the start of the competition, you’ve got to play well at the end.
“If they can get through the group stages then they’ve got three matches and they could be the World Cup finalists and winners.”
England face New Zealand on Friday at 1am (GMT).
