4. David Villa, New York City FC ($5.6m salary / £3.6m)
With over 240 career goals prior to joining MLS, it’s no surprise NYC FC decided to once again break the bank for the high-scoring veteran. It’s a gamble that’s paid off so far for the New York club in terms of goals with Villa recording double-digit goals for the club only midway through the season.
3. Frank Lampard, New York City FC ($6.0m salary / £3.9m)
Much like Andrea Pirlo, this is a gamble for NYC FC that the jury is still out on. After his 10-year streak of double-digit goals was ruined in 2013, Lampard stuck around in Man City for a year before deciding to move to the MLS. We’ll see if he earns that major cash splash later this year.
