Gerrard’s future at Anfield has come under some intense scrutiny recently as he nears the end of his current deal and he has frequently found himself left out of Brendan Rodgers’ squad on numerous occasions, too.
The 34-year-old was unable to help Liverpool from sliding to a 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday and it now appears as though he is a target for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls.
Houlier, who is now NYRB’s sporting director is hoping his connections to his former side will pay off as they look to bring in a replacement for the now departed Thierry Henry.
