Manchester United ended up settling for striker Anthony Martial at the transfer deadline, as they paid Monaco £36m for the 19-year-old.
According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils had to be extremely persistent as they were rejected four times when bidding for the French international.
“It’s true that the price for Martial is £57.6m, but take into account this sum includes bonuses which are very realistic,” Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said.
The Ligue 1 club initially said that the teenage striker is not for sale while rejecting offers worth £21.6m, £28.8m, £36m and £50.4m with bonuses.
Monaco eventually caved in and United made Martial the most expensive teenager ever.
His arrival at Old Trafford gives Man United fans moderate hope that they may have found their striker of the future. The Red Devils have been looking to upgrade since the loss of Robin van Persie.
