Delhi Daredevils could start the 2013 IPL season without Virdender Sehwag as their injury list grows worryingly longer.
There is more injury concern for Delhi Daredevils ahead of their IPL season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday, with explosive batsman Virender Sehwag a doubt to play.
Sehwag is struggling with a back problem and is still yet to join up with the squad in Delhi.
“He is having back spasm,” Daredevils coach Eric Simons said of Sehwag on in.com.
“We have no idea when he’s joining the side. We will take a call after he’s here.”
With less than 24 hours before the Daredevils travel to Delhi to kick-start the sixth edition of the IPL, it seems unlikely that the Indian opener will feature.
This injury adds to a difficult month for Sehwag, after the 34-year-old was dropped from the national Test side during India’s recent series against Australia for poor performances.
However, the big hitting batsman will still be a huge loss to Delhi’s starting XI and he would join a long list of absentees for the franchise.
England star Kevin Pietersen was ruled out of the tournament after being sent home from his side’s tour of New Zealand in March with a knee injury.
Kiwi all-rounder Jesse Ryder will be missing from the Daredevils team as well after being put in a medically induced coma when he was attacked outside a bar in Christchurch. Ryder has since come out of his coma and has begun to make a recovery, but still remains in hospital.
Delhi will also be without last season’s Purple cap holder Morne Morkel for their first match, as the South African is still playing for Titans in the Ram Jam T20 Challenge in his home country.
The man who took 25 IPL wickets in 2012 would also be absent for the Daredevils’ second IPL match if Titans make the final of the competition.
