The British record £59.7m signing picked up the problem whilst playing for Argentina during the international friendly loss to Portugal at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Di Maria’s right foot was trodden on by Red Devils loanee Nani and although the 26-year-old managed to play on until the hour mark, he was then replaced and now needs to be x-rayed.
However, the South American is positive about the issue and is hoping to be fit to face the Gunners at the weekend.
“It was just a blow. I hope it doesn’t swell any more so I can play at the weekend,” di Maria was quoted by the Guardian.
Left-back Luke Shaw also picked up a groin problem whilst on international duty with England, adding to manager Louis van Gaal’s selection headache ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium.
Di Maria and Shaw join Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, David de Gea, Jonny Evans, Radamel Falcao, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Rafael, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young on the list of doubts for the match.
