Mortal Kombat X, the latest installment of one of the most popular fighting game franchises of all-time, is set to be released on Tuesday. For over two decades the popular game series has generated TV shows, movies, comics and countless pop-culture references. But even more than the brutal and gory methods of being able to “Finish Him” with awesome (yet gory) “Fatalities” is the incredible cast of characters that the game’s designers have introduced over the years. Some of them you may know, some of them you won’t, but many of them have some interesting things in common with some of the most dominant athletes in the world.
Here is a look at which athletes are most like some of the signature characters of the Mortal Kombat series:
Scorpion is: Manny Pacquiao
Scorpion’s role in the storyline of Mortal Kombat 9 was underplayed, but he – much like Raiden, Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage – has been a key character in the franchise since its inception. Manny Pacquiao has been one of the very few boxers that has been able to keep fans interested in the sport even as he nears the end of what has been a Hall of Fame career, but several losses may have dimmed his legacy. And while the years have taken their toll on Pacquiao and he doesn’t seem like the former dominant fighter he once was, he’ll get his chance to shine once more and re-establish himself as one of the greatest of all-time when he faces Floyd Mayweather on May 2nd.
Plus, both Scorpion and Pacquiao are famous for calling out the opponents they want to fight. Pacquiao tells the world who he wants to fight, while Scorpion uses his famous catchphrase, “GET OVER HERE!”
