The 50-year-old wants fresh talent in front of goal.
Chelsea have been solid if unspectacular since Jose Mourinho returned as manager, but the one area they have lacked spark is in attack.
Between the club’s three strikers – Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres – just two Premier League goals have been scored and the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge have given the boss permission to sign new forwards in January, according to the Daily Mail.
Ba is the man likely to leave if this were to happen, with Mourinho not rating the Senegal international, although Eto’o and Torres have been equally as disappointing.
Many thought the Spaniard was back to the 29-year-old’s best when scoring and assisting in the 2-1 win over Manchester City last weekend, yet was once again poor during the shock 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.
Eto’o meanwhile looks like a shadow of the attacker that lit up the European stage whilst with Barcelona and Inter Milan and has just the one strike this term – against Norwich City in a 4-1 triumph.
Inexplicably Mourinho loaned out young talent Romelu Lukaku on transfer deadline day to Everton, where the Belgian has already scored five times in the league.
However, the 20-year-old cannot be recalled in January and therefore the Portuguese coach will have to get the chequebook out and look elsewhere.
It’s likely that the 50-year-old will want a player that is eligible to play in the Champions League – which rules out most of Europe’s elite.
The only obvious choices to fit this criteria are Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Radamel Falcao of AS Monaco.
