The manager has distanced the club and Inter’s Zanetti.
Inter Milan veteran Javier Zanetti will not be making a surprise move to Chelsea as manager Jose Mourinho quashes the claims of an unlikely transfer.
The 40-year-old has been at the San Siro since 1995 and has openly admitted that he wants to break Paolo Maldini’s all-time Serie A appearance record – something the Argentine is 38 games short of.
Zanetti’s current contract with Inter expires in the summer however and it’s thought head coach Walter Mazzarri doesn’t see the South American in his future plans.
Yet whilst it was thought Mourinho would give the Argentinian a deal at Stamford Bridge with a view to a role on the staff afterwards, the 51-year-old has denied that will be happening.
“There was no offer for Zanetti,” the Portuguese coach was quoted by talkSPORT.
“It is impossible to see [him] with another team that is not Inter.”
Mourinho and Zanetti worked together for two years when the former was in charge at Inter between 2008 and 2010, winning four major trophies.
The defender was captain at the time and was instrumental in the Italians’ historic treble win of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League in 2010.
Since arriving in Milan nearly 20 years ago Zanetti has played 795 times for Inter, winning 16 major trophies with the side during that time.
