Mourinho said that Fabregas knew exactly what he was doing when he spurned a return to the Emirates in favour of joining the west London club last summer after he vowed to build the team around the Spanish international.
“I promised him we’d build a team very adapted to his style of play,” he said.
“That he was going to be an important player in our project. And that, normally, good projects end with titles. He was looking for that.”
Wenger also insisted that there was more to the 27-year-old’s decision not to return to the Gunners that meets the eye, despite his decision not to bring him back seeming to play a big part in the move.
Fabregas is gearing himself up for a hostile reception, though, but he will be hoping to take a step closer to picking up the title.
But Mourinho believes Arsenal fans should show Fabregas the same kind of respect that Chelsea fans showed to Frank Lampard when he returned to Stamford Bridge with Manchester City earlier in the season.
“I don’t see a reason for Fabregas not to have the same.
“But if he has some bad reactions, I think he’s more than ready.”
