Napoli’s eccentric president Aurelio De Laurentis has explained his reasoning behind the club’s pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The outspoken Italian admits he is keen to pair Fellaini with current Napoli star Gokhan Inler, who was also made to wear a lion’s mask when he was unveiled by the club in 2011.
Although Fellaini has failed to perform since moving to United from Everton in a £27.5m deal, he is seemingly still regarded highly for the reputation he earned at Goodison Park, where his powerful performances saw him become hailed as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
The Belgian international may now be handed a lifeline in Serie A, with De Laurentis explaining his desire to have two lions in the middle of the park.
“They [Fellaini and Inler] would make a nice pair,” he said. “Together they have a hairstyle that looks like a lion’s mane and three years ago I presented Inler with the mask of a lion!”
